Week of June 1 - 5,

The Day You Begin and

The One and Only Ivan (#5)

Hello UES Friends and Happy Friday,

Guess what?  This year's Red Clover Award winner is ... (drum roll please)
POTATO PANTS!  That was last week's picture book read aloud.  If you missed it, I'll post it at the bottom of this entry or you can check out last week's post.

This week there are two books available for you to listen to and discuss.  Our picture book this week is another one of this year's Red Clover Books, The Day You Begin. It's written by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by Rafael Lopez.  Our other book is the next reading installment (#5) of The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate.

The Day You Begin

This week's chapter book read aloud is the continuation of The One and Only Ivan, written by Katherine Applegate, read by Mrs. Frey:

For more connections, information, activities...

The Day You Begin:

Here are some questions to think about and talk about with your people…
  • Have you ever felt like you were different than everyone around you? How did that feel?
    • If you had positive feelings, what made you feel that way?
    • If you had negative feelings, what made you feel that way?
    • Did your feelings change over time? Why do you think that happened?
  • What is something that makes you one-of-a-kind? What are some things you like or enjoy doing that you find other people don't understand? How might you begin to tell your story?
  • What is diversity? Why is it so important to talk about diversity?
  • How was it that Angelina and her sister "got to go EVERYWHERE" even though they stayed at home? Can you find the page in the book that illustrates their journeys?
  • Can you find the page that shows that Rigoberto has a story to tell?
Here is more information about the author Jacqueline Woodson. It includes information about her picture books as well as her chapter books. She includes a list of some things that make her unique.  Can you think of more things that make you unique after looking at Jacqueline's list?

Here is more information about the illustrator Rafael Lopez.  Rafael has illustrated many books.  Do you recognize any of the books that we have in our library?

Try drawing a picture of yourself and your story.  Use some of the illustrations in The Day You Begin to give you some ideas.

THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN:

Here is a link to a short video showing The Real Ivan when he was at Zoo Atlanta.

Here is a link to a longer video (about 8 minutes) about The Real Ivan as told by the curator at Zoo Atlanta who worked with Ivan for about ten years.  She gives more details about Ivan's life after his stay - for twenty six years - at the Big Top Mall.

This link will take you to more information about Katherine Applegate, author.  She provides a sneak peak into the upcoming sequel to Ivan, The One and Only Bob.
