Week of May 18 - 22: Library Freyday #6

She's Wearing a Dead Bird on her Head and

The One and Only Ivan (#3)

Happy Friday!

Again this week there will be two books available for your listening pleasure.  One is a picture book, the other the continuation of reading the chapter book:  The One and Only Ivan.  This week the picture book we'll be reading is She's Wearing a Dead Bird on her Head, by Kathryn Lasky, illustrated by David Catrow:
She's Wearing a Dead Bird on her Head!

This week's chapter book read aloud is the continuation of The One and Only Ivan, written by Katherine Applegate, read by Mrs. Frey:

SHE'S WEARING A DEAD BIRD ON HER HEAD!

Here is the Author's Note from the last page of She's Wearing a Dead Bird on her Head:

Here are some questions to think about and talk about with your people…
  • Why would people want to wear birds on their hats?
  • Why did Harriet, Minna and their friends want to call their club "The Audubon Society??
  • Why did the newly formed Audubon Society ask school children to help?
  • On the last page of the book, it looks like the illustrator, David Catrow, drew a spoonbill walking out of the picture frame. What do you think that means?
  • Have you seen any new birds around?  What do they look and sound like?
  • Try going outside and drawing birds while observing them in their natural habitat.  Maybe you can show me what you’ve done when you visit during office hours:  Fridays from 11-1.  Use the link at the top of The Daily Special Blog!

About the author and illustrator...

Here is Kathryn Lasky's website.  It includes information about her picture books as well as her chapter books. Did you know Kathryn Lasky wrote The Guardian of GA'Hoole series?

Here is more information about David Catrow, including books that he wrote AND illustrated.  Did you know he illustrated I Wanna Iguana and I like Myself?  These are two of the most popular books in our library!

MORE INTERESTING WEBSITES ABOUT BIRDS:
Here is the link to The Audubon Society .  There is a very cool owl, if you can find it, on the first "page' of the site.  Within the Audubon link, there is a specific section, Audubon for Kids, that includes various information and activities about birds.  I liked "All about Owls" even though they didn't mention Swoop.  Another activity I enjoyed was learning how to draw a black-capped chickadee with David Allen Sibley.  The site includes other bird drawing lessons as well as some fun activities to do at home.

This pair of bald eagles have new eaglets that were born in April.  The eaglets are getting less fuzzy but are still
super fun to watch.

Here is a link to Cornell University Cornell Lab of Ornithology .  One of my favorite parts of this site is helping you identify or produce how to learn, identify and make bird calls .  My cardinal whistle is pretty good.  I'm still working on others...

Here is a link to the Cornell University Lab Bird Cams, that include hummingbird, osprey and hawk cams.  There are even more than that ...

Here is the link to our very own North Branch Nature Center.  It's a great place for both birds and humans.  Maybe you can take a walk there!  I heard some very chirpy birds and saw a snapping turtle when I was there last week.

THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN:

Here is a link to a short video showing The Real Ivan when he was at Zoo Atlanta.

Here is a link to a longer video (about 8 minutes) about The Real Ivan as told by the curator at Zoo Atlanta who worked with Ivan for about ten years.  She gives more details about Ivan's life after his stay - for twenty six years - at the Big Top Mall.

This link will take you to more information about Katherine Applegate, author.  She provides a sneak peak into the upcoming sequel to Ivan, The One and Only Bob.
